Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill (SB) 1608 (Chapter 549, Statutes of 2008) on September 29, 2008, requiring all California architects to complete mandatory continuing education courses on disability access requirements as a condition of license renewal. The bill also requires licensees to provide coursework documentation to the California Architects Board with the renewal application.

The AIACC has partnered with aecKnowledge to offer three courses that fulfill your disability access continuing education requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many continuing education units do I need to fulfill the license renewal requirement?
5 units/hours (1 hour of coursework = 1 unit earned)

How do I take an online course?

  1. Visit www.aecKnowledge.com
  2. Register for a free account
  3. Click the “Continuing Ed” tab
  4. Select the accessibility courses you are interested in
  5. Watch the course at your convenience and take a 10 question quiz to receive a certificate of completion.

Which courses fulfill the new license renewal requirements?
You must take all three Accessibility courses to fulfill the 5 required hours of continuing education:

Disabilities Access for Dwellings (1.5 hrs)
Accessible Public Accommodations (1.5 hrs)

Stepping Through Vertical Heights (2.0 hrs)

Do the CALGreen courses I see on this page fulfill the ADA requirements?
No.  Those courses are offered to help architects understand the new green building code, CALGreen, but on not required to renew your license.

How does the California Architects Board know I fulfilled my ADA requirements?
The fastest way to process your license renewal is to fill out the back of the license renewal form with information on the courses you completed. Although you can still attach your certificates of completion, this may result in delays in processing time.

Do these courses also fulfill my AIA/CES requirements?
Yes. Every other week, the AIACC submits all AIA members who completed the courses to AIA/CES. You should see your transcripts updated with your attendance within 2 weeks of completing the course.
